Buying a used car in Ireland safely takes a history check, matching paperwork, a mileage check and a test drive. It costs about €20 and an evening.

Used car checklist for Ireland

  • History check with Cartell or Motorcheck: write-offs, clocking, imports. Cartell's standard check is €20 (€45 for three); premium adds finance and UK history.
  • Outstanding finance means the lender may own the car and can take it back.
  • VRC in the seller's name at their address; VIN matches the car.
  • Walk away if there is no VRC or the seller will not meet at home.
  • View in daylight with the engine cold: tyres at least 1.6mm, no warning lights.
  • Test drive on mixed roads: brakes pull straight, gears change smoothly.
  • UK imports: Cat N is repaired non-structural damage, Cat S structural. Both cut value.

Paying and transferring ownership

  • Pay by bank transfer and get a receipt with registration, price, date and both names.
  • Private sale: the seller gets a one-time transfer PIN (valid 30 minutes); you complete it with a verified MyGovID account.
  • Dealer sale: the dealer handles the transfer, and consumer law gives you more protection.
  • Tax and insure the car before you drive it home.

Common questions

How do I check if a used car has finance on it in Ireland?

Run a premium Cartell or Motorcheck history check on the registration.

How can I tell if a car has been clocked?

Compare the odometer with past NCT certificates and service stamps, as readings that drop or stall are a warning.
