The NCT cost in 2026 is €60 for a full test and €40 for a retest, and a visual-only retest is free. The first test is due at four years, then every two years, then yearly from ten.
NCT fees 2026
- Full test: €60.
- Retest: €40, booked within 21 days and completed within 30.
- Visual-only retest: free, same time limits.
- Cancelling or not turning up with under 5 working days' notice: €24.
- Replacement certificate: €15.50.
- Under the NCTS customer charter, the test is free if no appointment can be offered within 28 days (exceptions apply, for example if the test is more than 7 days overdue) or if you queue more than 65 minutes.
When is my NCT due?
- On the anniversary of first registration, in Ireland or abroad.
- Age 4: first test. Age 4 to 10: every two years. Age 10 and over: yearly.
- Age 30 to 39, not used commercially: every two years. Over 40: exempt.
- Test up to 90 days early without losing time.
- No valid NCT: 3 penalty points and a €60 fine, €90 if unpaid after 28 days.
Checklist to pass first time
- All lights work; headlight lenses clean and uncracked.
- Tyres: at least 1.6mm tread (RSA recommends 3mm), matching sizes on each axle.
- Wipers, washer fluid and horn work; no cracks in the driver's view.
- Every seatbelt clicks and releases.
- Warning lights fixed, not just reset.
- Bring the Vehicle Registration Certificate and a driving licence or Public Services Card.
