The electric car grant in Ireland for 2026 is up to €3,500 from SEAI, taken off the price of a new fully electric car by the dealer. VRT relief of up to €5,000 also applies to electric cars registered before 31 December 2026.
SEAI grant: up to €3,500
- New battery electric cars bought privately; the dealer claims it for you.
- Price cap: €50,000 for applications after 31 July 2026 (was €60,000).
- A lower price limit also applies: check seai.ie for your car.
- Not for plug-in hybrids or second-hand cars.
VRT relief: up to €5,000
- Applied automatically at registration.
- Full relief where the OMSP is €40,000 or less, tapering to nothing at €50,000.
- Covers cars, including used imports, registered before 31 December 2026.
Other savings
- Home charger: up to €300 from SEAI. Get approval before buying and finish within 6 months.
- Motor tax: €120 a year.
- Company cars: the original market value used to work out benefit in kind is reduced by €10,000 in 2026, €5,000 in 2027 and €2,500 in 2028.
- Vans: €3,800 for a standard N1 van, €7,600 for a large panel van.
- Scrappage top-up of €5,000: closed on 1 July 2026, under review.
